Associate Professor Verica Rupar has been elected Chair of the World Journalism Education Council.

The role was announced at the end of the 5th World Journalism Education Congress at Paris-Dauphine University attended by more than 500 educators from the 9th to the 11th of July.

Associate professor Rupar, who teaches journalism and communications in the School of Communications Studies, organised the previous WJEC congress in Auckland in 2016.

New Zealand Broadcasting School Lecturer and JEANZ President, Karen Neill said the appointment was recognition of the standing of journalism education institutions in New Zealand.

Professor Rupar announced that the next WJEC congress would be hosted jointly by the Communication University of China and the Shanghai International Studies University in Beijing and Shanghai in 2022.
