Augmented Reality book wins competition

Art and design lecturer Tatiana Tavares is one of the winners of Communication Arts Magazine’s annual illustration contest.

Tavares was delighted to hear news of her win. She says, “It was an amazing feeling to be recognised by one of the world’s most prominent illustration awards.”

Communication Arts Magazine is a renowned industry publication among creative professionals. The competition has been running for more than 60 years. Tavares’ winning entry was among the 125 projects selected out of almost 4000 submissions.

Saints of Paradox is part of Tavares’ PhD work. Saints of Paradox is an illustrated Augmented Reality (AR) picture book that follows a woman and her room of memories 40 years after the 1964 coup d'état in Brazil.

Saints of Paradox contains a mix of mediums including AR, illustration, and animation. Tavares’ PhD research explores how AR technology can expand narration in picture books.
