5 questions: Professor Niven Winchester

From government policies to setting rules for sports competitions, Professor Niven Winchester said the most surprising thing about Economics, is the breadth of topics it can be applied to.

We asked Professor Winchester five questions ahead of his Inaugural Professorial Address – he discussed his research on climate policy analysis and sports ranking systems, what motivates him and what being a Professor means.

“It means a lot of responsibilities, especially in this day and age where there’s a lot of misinformation out there. We as an academic community need to educate our students to be able to realise what is science and what is pseudoscience. In our research, we need to be able to provide quantitative analysis and tools that are soundly based on evidence for decision making.”
