Employability is something all tertiary students need to work on from their first university paper right through to the workplace, says AUT senior lecturer and career specialist Margie Elley-Brown.

Employers are looking for graduates who juggled part-time work while studying – and Elley-Brown has noticed a surprisingly large number of students lack this experience.

“If they’ve got some relevant part-time work experience or voluntary experience in an area they are hoping to work in, that is points on the board for them,” she says.
