Easier access to teacher education

By offering education programmes at the South Campus, AUT aims to make teacher education more accessible to South Aucklanders and address the teacher shortage.

A recent assessment of the New Zealand teacher shortage found that more than 800 teaching roles were yet to be filled when the 2018 school year began.

The teacher shortage, which is most severe in Auckland, affects teachers across the sector – from early childhood centres to primary, intermediate and secondary schools.

AUT’s teacher education programmes are now available at the AUT South Campus to make education more accessible to South Aucklanders and ultimately address the teacher shortage in years to come.

The teaching programmes on offer include the Bachelor of Education in Primary Teaching or Early Childhood Teaching, along with the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching, a one-year degree for candidates who already have a relevant undergraduate degree.
